Will the Amazon Kindle's new lending feature allow public libraries to lend books to Kindle owners?

Best answer: No. The lending feature means that you can lend one of your ebooks to a friend for up to 2 weeks. And just like with a real book, you can't access this book while your friend has it... and you can only lend that book to your friend one time.
Libraries technically "lend" you a book, but in ebook terms, it's just called "borrowing" and that is not linked with "lending" to a friend. I'm sure in time this feature will be available.
All answer: Answer 1 No. That would be borrowing, not lending. The lending feature is going to be just like that of the Nook. Unless the feature is disabled by the publisher, you can lend a book one time only for 14 days. As for library borrowing, that's a different feature and uses a different file format. Amazon isn't likely ever going support that feature.
There's an announcement about the lending feature on the Kindle forum where it explains what details are currently known.
ETA: the announcement is the one that says "Coming Soon for Kindle." 2010-11-08 13:56:59
