What is the future of arts education in secondary schools?

I want to teach art in secondary schools, but I have heard a lot about how the NCLB has cut it out of middle and elementary schools and cut back significantly in high school. This is depressing to hear as I REALLY want to be an art teacher, preferably high school. With Obama as president, are their going to be any changes with arts education? Or is one day, the arts going to be cut out of secondary schools forever?

Yes, that part of education is being greatly cut. Students who are artistically inclined, like myself, are being completely denied. As for President Obama, he's not by himself, and there are other things that he has put on his agenda BEFORE education - econ., war, etc. So you'll just need patience. in the meantime, I suggest you teach at a democratic school or Sudbury Valley model school. You are free to teach whatever you wish to eager and willing students.

Even if Obama changes art education, the arts department is usually the first one cut if the district is having budgeting issues. Some schools don't even offer art, music, ect. Consider looking into a teaching degree, in adolescence education, with an art concentration. This way, if you are having difficulty finding a job as an art teacher, you still have a general teaching degree to help you in the hiring process.

My son's elementary school offers one art class a week for their students. This isn't ideal, but funding doesn't allow for more. My daughter attends high school and had art class every day last semester. It is an elective, and we encouraged her to take an art class to offset the challenges of Algebra and Biology. Currently the trend is for art teachers to travel to several schools within the district. It would probably be a good idea to get an education degree in an additional subject. So when you graduate, you will have an art/history degree. There are fewer art teacher positions than English or math positions. One area that needs more teachers is special education. And there are art therapy options. Carefully consider special ed. because it has its own challenges. Lastly, art is a subject easily integrated into all of the other subjects. If you were in a teaching position, you could use art to enhance the students' educational experiences.
