Ok, so my hair is like practically black. It looks brownish in the sun, but not much. I want to do something to my hair to make it look lighter, like maybe highlights or something.
I would dye it, but my parents are totally against chemical dying. I've hennaed my hair once, but it didn't really make a difference (since my hair is sooo dark). Does anyone know if I can my dye my hair or something with NATURAL dyes? and like, what kind of of dyes? Where can I get them?

Best answer: I had occasion to research olive oil as used in hair care and though it is a natural hair lightener as used for highlighting purposes it will not drastically bleach the hair - it will lighten black to a brown not to a gray. Liberally soak hair with oil and leave it on for 4 hours. Other tested and tried safe lighteners are :
1) Use of a harsh shampoo like:
Johnson & Johnson's Baby shampoo (surprisingly it's very harsh)
or Pert Plus
2) Dawn dish washing liquid.
Either of these can help lighten without risk to your hair.
You will know that they are working as you will see some color in the water you are rinsing out. There were some recent similar questions on ANSWERS and users of the above verified the above worked successfully.

Answer 5 Well, people with dark hair have a harder time dying it something like blonde or red because it requires a lot of chemicals, and you can run the risk of breaking or damaging your hair. Not a lot of dyes don't have chemicals. My best advice is to try and high light it was spray color. It's temporary, but if you have someone good at it to do it, it would like like its been professionally highlighted.
Or, to go REALLY natural, just spend a lot of time in the sun. Hair does react to it, you know. My hair used to be a really dark-brown almost black color. I've sort of formed faint, natural reddish-auburn highlights. 2008-07-17 12:41:20
Answer 6 If your hair is naturally that dark it may be REALLY difficult to find any kind of natural dye that will be strong enough to lighten it a few shades. If your parents are worried about chemical dyes damaging your hair, that's really not something you have to worry about if you dye your hair only one time every couple of months when your roots start growing in. As long as you give your hair time to recouperate after the dye and condition it regularly shortly after you dye it, it shouldn't do much damage at all.
When you get to the point where you bleach and redye your hair once a week like I did at one point, that's when you should start worrying about damage.
I know there are things you can buy that are supposed to lighten your hair but I've never tried one. (I know one is called SunIt or something) But, from what I hear they really are not very effective. 2008-07-17 12:43:32
Answer 7 get some lemon juice, pour it in an empty spray bottle(you can buy those at a dollar store or walmart for cheap), spray in streaks and sit out in the sun for 2 hrs. A natural harmless way to dye/highlight your hair. 2008-07-17 12:44:04

Answer 9 You could probably find natural dyes in a health foods store, or online. Squirting lemon juice in your hair and standing outside in the sun lightens your hair also. 2008-07-17 12:46:08
