How do you feel about gourmet foods on food stamps?
I just read an article that says some younger people are using their food stamps to buy organic foods, such as salmon and foods in specialty shops.

Best answer: I think its great that those things are included as acceptable items. I think the state should provide the money to pay for better food on food stamps as well.
NOT because its a luxury gourmet food. Rather because you can get better quality food. Meats that arent loaded with steroids and antibiotics. Foods that arent 95% refined flour and sugar. Just because someone is poor and needs help does not mean they should be forced to eat nasty crappy unhealthy food.
Its really very sad that the only food many people can afford is junk food. We as a country have been living beyond our means for a very long time. The food supply shows it well. We have sacrificed health for food that is dirt cheap and massively unhealthy. And now people want to call it a gourmet food or a luxury if someone decides that just because they are poor they want to be able to still eat healthy.......

Answer 4 Why not? I mean lower income people have a right to be concerned about there health and nutrition just as much as anybody else. I do believe that a large percentage of people who receive help or aid from the Government can not help there circumstance; it is beyond their control. Don't worry, Not everyone is cheating tax payers buy mooching off of Uncle Sam! 2010-03-16 17:28:21

Answer 10 They should be for the basics and the necessities only. Unless of course, someone has special dietary needs... but how would we know that? 2010-03-16 17:33:24
Answer 11 I think they will run out of money before they run out of month. I've no real problem with what they buy, I just know that the food stamp program keeps some people from starvation! It really doesn't allow much for luxury. It is bare subsistence. 2010-03-16 17:35:41
Answer 12 I believe food stamps are best used for "cheap" healthy foods
milk, eggs, fruit, pasta, chicken, veggies etc. someone eating smoked salmon, shrimp
or filet mignon courtesy of the american taxpayer needs to have them taken away 2010-03-16 17:37:03
Answer 13 long as they don't use wel fare for crack, when i could be using it to pay my bills.
whats so wrong with good food on food stamps. you mean poor folks shouldn't be aloud to eat some steak? 2010-03-16 17:55:52
Answer 14 The food stamp regulation has been adjusted to allow those young people to collect benefits without having children. They have say, 100.00 to last one all month. Whether they buy peanut butter or organic produce makes no difference as they will run out of the 100.00 at the end of the month either way.
I think they should eat healthy if possible. Many food stamp recipients eat potato chips and hot dogs and become unhealthy. Then they get medicaid to make themselves well. No insults intended, please, so would it not be better if they eat healhy and stay out of the doctor's office? 2010-03-16 19:11:57
