Exactly, how popular are E-books / Amazon Kindle books?

I'm not sure I want to give up my paperbacks... but Walmart is selling a really nice Kindle and it's fairly inexpensive compared to what they were when they came out. Is this a passing fad, or the next big thing?

Most big publishers are now selling over 10 percent of their books as ebooks. Some self-publishing authors are doing well with selling ebooks direct to readers. The big 'market consultant' reports say that the ebook market should be about 25% of the consumer book market by 2014/5. ebooks are not going away, and the Kindle is a lovely device to read them on. Libraries are starting to offer Kindle 'lending'. But be aware that many big publishers have been tardy about converting their books, especially their backlist, and you will be clicking the button for "Tell the publisher you would like to read this book on the Kindle" far too many times on the Amazon store.

I have a kindle and I love it. If you're an avid reader it will pay for itself in a year or two.

I agree, these are very nice. I do not own one myself, but If I read more often I would invest into one. If you want one, I would wait a little more as the Kindle Fire is coming out soon, which has a color touch screen and you can do internet, apps, movies etc. Good luck!

I would never give up my books for a Kindle. Reading a book online would give me a migraine.

It is what's coming - there are textbooks on readers now. I read all the time - when I'm not on Y!A. But I buy my books - I do not use the library. My DH bought me a Kindle for my birthday last year because he was tired of lugging my bag of books around when we traveled. I did not think that I would care for it, because I like to be able to 'hold' the book. But it's very convenient - I have games on it as well, so that if I'm not in the mood to read, I can switch to games. The "life" without recharge is quite long, and I love being able to search, buy, and download a book anywhere that I am. (Remember, we travel.) Although, there are a lot of people that are irritated at Amazon - Amazon says the price of the Kindle book is set by the publisher. If you can buy a Kindle book at $13.99, and the Amazon price for the actual book is $14.73 - there's something really wrong, as you can sell, trade, loan, or give away the actual book. Plus, when the book comes out in paperback, the Kindle price often stays at the original price. You can get magazines and newspapers on the K as well. There's a large segment that are Kindle books written for the K only. Some are VERY good. I'm very happy to have it, but I do search for 'deals', so that I'm saving money. And I still check out the markdown tables at the bookstore. Oops - sorry about the late post. I got busy and forgot to "Submit".
