Are Amazon Kindle free books legal?

There are a bunch of books on amazon.com for kindle that are free- transcribed by volunteers, available on the web, is what the list says. Are they ok? Do they violate copyright?

Yes. Amazon is very careful about copyright violations. All free books are either in the public domain or have been released for free by the author.

Copyright only lasts a maximum of 80 years in most countries. The free books are mostly these. Some publishers over time also release their books for free. The free books do not violate copyright, they have simply been release as "public domain" items and can be used by anyone, for anything, sold, modified .... use your imagination, it's all ok. These are all perfectly legal.
